The only whale capable of swallowing a man is the Sperm whale and in 1891 a seaman named James Barley was claimed to have been swallowed alive by one and then retrieved after the whale was killed. Although mentally unbalanced for several weeks, he is said to have eventually recovered from the ordeal.
